NAIBA Offers Tips for Holding YA Events

A Whole Lot of Reading Going On
In 1999 San Francisco authors/journalists Jane Ganahl and Jack Boulware mused over drinks about getting together a bunch of authors for a big reading. They tapped Phil Bronstein, the editor of the San Francisco Examiner, to foot the $300 bill for 25 authors to read in Golden Gate Park for what they called Litstock.

Children’s Books at the 2011 National Book Festival: A Photo-Essay
With a theme of “Celebrating the Joys of Reading Aloud,” the 11th annual National Book Festival took place this past weekend, September 24 and 25, on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., marking the first time the festival was spread over two days. An estimated crowd of 200,000 turned out to attend presentations and have books signed by more than 100 authors.

Turkey Announced as Market Focus Partner for London Book Fair
The London Book Fair and Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism have announced Turkey as the Market Focus partner of The London Book Fair 2013. As in past years, the Market Focus program will be supported by a series of public events across the UK featuring visiting Turkish authors curated by the British Council, the UK’s leading cultural relations organization. The London Book Fair Market Focus is an opportunity for UK and international publishers to liaise with their foreign counterparts, and seek out and capitalize on new business partnerships.

Bouchercon 2011: Murder Under the Arch
Crime fiction fans flocked to St. Louis for the annual Bouchercon World Mystery Convention, an event that drew 1,600 attendees to the city under the arch. Under the direction of current chair and Crimespree magazine co-founder Jon Jordan, the conference fired like a well-oiled gun.

Comics, Digital Delivery and a Few Movies Rule Comic-Con 2011
Even the failure of a major book retail chain couldn’t put a damper on this year’s San Diego Comic-con international. Attendance is capped at about 130,000—still not a bad crowd—and the show featured big announcements about forthcoming graphic novels, digital delivery and more than a few blockbuster movies and TV shows. And publishers contacted by PW Comics World seemed happy with the sales of books at their booths and the number of media outlets on hand to write about them.

Slice Literary Gets Amazon Grant
Slice Literary, Inc. has been awarded a $25,000 grant from Amazon.com in support of their first annual Slice Literary Writers’ Conference taking place at Brooklyn College on September 16 and 17. Comic-Con 2011: ComicsPRO Retailers Survey the Market
The comics retailer advocacy group ComicsPRO presented a slate of retailer-themed programming at Comic-Con International, starting with a breakfast and a State of the Industry panel with representatives from Marvel, DC Comics, IDW, Dark Horse and Diamond Comics Distributors.
