Among the meeting’s highlights: the announcement of the ALA’s Youth Media Awards, including the coveted Newbery and Caldecott medals; a bustling exhibit floor; and a strong author presence.

Keeping Regional Shows Relevant
For the past five years publishers have talked about the need to consolidate trade shows—and lower their costs. A struggling economy, the increased power of Amazon, and the erosion of print book sales to e-books have only accelerated calls for change from not only publishers but from some booksellers as well.

Edwards Giving Retail Keynote

Digital and More at PubWest 2011
The 2011 PubWest conference, held November 3–5 in Henderson, Nev., attracted publishers and vendors from across the country with Alison Akau of Aiea, Hawaii’s Pacific Historic Parks in attendance alongside Bruce Shaw and Adam Salomone from Boston’s Harvard Common Press. It was the first trip to PubWest for both publishers, with Akau making the trip to get up to speed on the newest publishing trends, while Shaw said he was attracted by the lineup of speakers.

NEA Studies Writers Statistics
Writers and authors are better educated and earn more on average than the rest of the U.S. workforce, according to a study by the National Endowment for the Arts, based on data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Commerce. The study, “Artists and Art Workers in the United States,” draws on information from the “American Community Survey (2005–2009)” and updates the NEA’s earlier study, “Artists in the Workforce, 2000–2005.”

PNBA Facing Tough Decisions
The annual membership meeting at the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association held last Thursday at the start of the association’s annual meeting was a rather somber affair, with executive director Thom Chambliss reporting that PNBA will suffer a loss of between $40,000 and $50,000 in 2011 largely due to a significant decrease in titles in the holiday catalogue and the disappointing.

GLiBA Cuts Staff, Will Hold Joint Trade Show
To deal with a 20% decline in membership and falling revenue, the Great Lakes Independent Booksellers Association is eliminating its associate director position and will hold a joint trade show with Midwest Independent Booksellers Association in 2012 and 2013.

National Book Awards Nominate 21 Finalists for 2011
The announcement of the nominees for the 2011 National Book Awards had an extra dose of drama this year as the National Book Foundation added a sixth selection to the Young People’s Literature category after the original broadcast over Oregon Public Broadcasting’s program Think Out Loud had only five nominees.
