The construction of a second Vietnam site is progressing according to schedule, says COO Richard Lim. “The warehouse has been up and running since July while the main three-story production building will commence operations by late September. This will double Hung Hing Printing Group’s capacity in Vietnam by 2026.”
In China, the group has made considerable changes to its Zhongshan facility, where all printing and post-press production processes will be placed under one roof instead of being siloed to support different products. “Our paper trading operations will also be moved here, effectively extending and leveraging our group’s purchasing power to support the factory,” Lim says. “Now that the corrugator machines at our Zhongshan and Shunde facilities have been upgraded, these two will be our major corrugated box manufacturing sources serving the domestic China market.”
Hung Hing’s greening efforts have continued unabated. “Our photovoltaic infrastructure, which covers six sites—Hong Kong headquarters, Shenzhen, Zhongshan, Heshan, Shunde, and Vietnam—has raised our total solar capacity to 9,806kWp,” says executive chairman Matthew Yum. “Collectively, the system generated around 4.4 million units in the first half of the year, compared to just over 2.5 million units in the same period last year. This offsets approximately 1,771 tons of carbon emissions, underscoring our progress toward low-carbon operations. An additional 1,019kWp will be installed at our Wuxi plant.”
Hung Hing’s total electricity consumption, which includes solar energy, has decreased. So, too, has its water usage. “These reflect our significant efficiency enhancements in energy and water management,” Yum says, adding that the production waste recycling rate remains high at 96%, which includes 14,294 tons of wastepaper, 136 tons of plastic, and 191 tons of metal. “Non-recyclable waste is controlled at 531 tons while more than 95% of the papers used was either forestry scheme-certified or made from high recycled content.”
In June, Yum and his team made substantial headway in their journey toward EUDR compliance. “We will soon receive official EUDR statement numbers from upstream European suppliers, which will enable full traceability of our raw paper materials starting in July,” says Yum, whose company celebrates its 75th anniversary this year. “We have finalized and signed EUDR compliance agreements with all core suppliers, marking a complete rollout of compliance initiatives across our supply chain.”
As for the newly formed AI team, it is currently leading several projects to streamline operations by implementing automation and predictive maintenance, enhancing efficiency, reducing costs, and minimizing downtime. “Going forward,” Yum says, “this team will help us drive growth by leveraging AI to analyze market trends and develop new products that align with customer needs.”
