The Walt Disney Company and Webtoon Entertainment have reached a tentative agreement that will see Webtoon develop and build a new digital comics platform featuring current comic book runs as well as decades of past comics from across Disney’s portfolio, which includes comics from Marvel, Star Wars, and 20th Century Studios. In all, some 35,000 comics are set to appear on the as-yet-unnamed platform.
According to the announcement, the agreement marks the first time all 35,000 comics will be available via a single digital comics service for one price. The Disney announcement said the agreement represents “an expansion upon Marvel Unlimited,” which is Marvel's current digital comics subscription service. The new platform will include a mix of vertical and traditional formats for archived comics, current comic book runs, and original stories.
As part of the deal, Disney and Webtoon entered into a non-binding agreement through which Disney will acquire a 2% interest in Webtoon. The proposed investment and the commercial collaboration are subject to the parties entering into a final agreement.
Webtoon founder and CEO Junkoo Kim called the partnership “a powerful next step for our growing global business, and a strong foundation for even greater collaboration with Disney in the years ahead.”
The new agreement builds on a deal Webtoon made last month with Disney to bring a number of original licensed stories and past comics from Marvel’s library to the scrolling format.
