Chris Saad, owner of Chris' Corner: Books for Kids and Teens in Philadelphia, died July 31 of complications from scleroderma disease. She was 40. Saad earned a Ph.D. in education at the University of Pennsylvania, where her studies focused on children's literature and on human sexuality education. She taught at the elementary and university level, and opened her bookstore in 1998. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that books be provided to needy children through Firstbook, 1319 Frank St. NW, Suite 1000, Washington, D.C. 20004.
