OUP to Acquire Karger
Oxford University Press (OUP) has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Karger Publishers, the Basel, Switzerland-based medical press, with the transaction to be finalized in December.
"We are delighted to make this important step towards welcoming Karger colleagues, authors, editors, and its wider community to OUP," OUP CEO Nigel Portwood said. "Karger has a long history of providing the highest quality resources for medicine and healthcare professionals. Our shared focus on quality and scholarly integrity offer a strong foundation from which we can continue to serve researchers in medicine and health science far into the future."
Founded in 1890, Karger publishes a backlist of 9,000 books in medicine and health sciences. The acquisition by OUP, a department of the University of Oxford and one of the oldest and largest university press publishers in the world, is expected to extend the reach and impact of Karger's books, per the announcement.
“We undertook an extensive process to identify the most suitable partner, and we are convinced that Oxford University Press represents the best possible choice," chairwoman Gabriella Karger said. "Karger becomes part of a publishing house that has even a longer history, going back to the 15th century, and reflects our values and dedication to high quality publishing.”
