University of Minnesota Press Director Retires
Doug Armato, director of the University of Minnesota Press for 27 years, has announced that he is retiring from the position at the end of December.
Armato is the fifth director in the press’s 100-year history, which was commemorated this past summer, and is credited for spearheading the expansion of the press’s list and significantly building up its audience by emphasizing interdisciplinary scholarship and developing strong Indigenous studies, trade, and regional literature programs.
Armato also launched a scholarly journals program that has grown to 16 publications, digitized the press’s entire backlist, and published frontlist simultaneously in print and digital formats.
The University of Minnesota Press will begin a national search for a new director in the fall of 2026. In the meantime, associate director Susan Doerr and associate director for book publishing Emily Hamilton will serve as interim co-directors as of January 1, 2026.
