Oni Press to Publish ‘Gender Queer’ Annotated Edition
Oni Press has announced Gender Queer: The Annotated Edition, an expanded hardcover reissue of Maia Kobabe’s 2019 memoir that is set to be published in May 2026.
Gender Queer has consistently been one of the most frequently banned books in the U.S. since its original publication and has received widespread critical acclaim, earning honors from the ALA Alex and Stonewall Book Awards. The Annotated Edition will see all-new commentary from Kobabe exploring the technicalities of comic creation, and will highlight personal anecdotes from a host of writers and artists discussing their own experiences growing up queer and genderqueer, per the announcement. Contributors include Justin Hall and Shannon Watters.
“I am so excited to share Gender Queer: The Annotated Edition," Kobabe said. "It’s been almost seven years since I wrote the final words of this memoir; revisiting these pages today, in a radically different and less accepting political climate, sparked a lot of new thoughts for me as well."
