TikTok Owner ByteDance to Shutter 8th Note Press Imprint

The small publishing arm of ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, appears to be shutting down, after agents and authors received emails last month informing them that it would return publication rights, the Bookseller reports. The publisher had previously inked an agreement with Zando, industry veteran Molly Stern’s independent publishing outfit, releasing Caitlin Cross’s Hollywood romance On Screen and Off Again, in February and Syed M. Masood’s The Last Man in Paradise last month. PW has confirmed that at least one high-ranking employee of the imprint is leaving ByteDance; others, including editorial director Allison Moore, have indicated as much on LinkedIn. Representatives of ByteDance declined to comment when asked by PW for comment.
