Judy Blume Receives 2025 WNBA Award
Judy Blume has received this year’s WNBA Award, presented by the Women’s National Book Association. The award is given every other year to a living American woman who derives part or all of her income from books and allied arts and who has done meritorious work in the world of books beyond the duties or responsibilities of her profession or occupation,” according to the association.
Called one of the most banned authors of the 20th century, Blume has written such books as Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, Blubber, and Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, among others. In 2016, she also opened Books & Books in Key West, Fla., with her husband, George Cooper.
“What distinguishes Blume is her meritorious work in speaking out against book banning and censorship in schools and libraries,” NC Weil, WNBA Award co-chair, said. “At an age when she could deservedly rest on her accomplishments, she chose instead to open a bookstore in Key West with her husband, and to speak out nationally about threats to books.”
