Special Libraries Association to Disband
The Special Libraries Association, founded in 1909 and headquartered in Mount Laurel, N.J., announced March 26 that it will disband. Citing financial precarity and changes within the profession, the SLA board of directors has chosen to cease operations after 116 years.
“This decision was not made lightly,” SLA president Hildy Dworkin wrote in a statement. “For over a century, SLA has been a leader in the information profession, fostering collaboration and innovation among our members. However, shifting industry dynamics, changing professional needs, and financial realities have led us to this moment.”
The association still plans to convene June 7–10 for the 2025 SLA Annual Conference and Expo, to be held at the University of Pittsburgh. The gathering will enable the SLA to honor its final slate of award winners and support members, partners, and stakeholders in the transition.
