New Ownership for Denver’s Second Star to the Right

Dea Lavoie, the owner of Second Star to the Right, an 11-year-old children's bookstore in Denver that also sells toys, announced this morning that it is changing hands. The new owner is Joe Durst, a Colorado native and Denver resident who has been coaching professional ultimate frisbee while building his bookselling career.

Durst worked as a part-time bookseller at Powell’s in Portland, Ore., while in college, and worked as a bookseller at Daunt Books in London afterwards. More than five years ago, Joe cofounded Sudden Fiction Books in Castle Rock, Colo. and remains co-owner with Christi Piper. Both Second Star to the Right and Sudden Fiction are stops on the pre–Winter Institute bookstore tours taking place on February 23, before WI2025 officially kicks off with an opening night reception.
