Ibram X. Kendi, Imani Perry to Headline Inaugural Zora Neale Hurston Summit
National Book Award winners Ibram X. Kendi and Imani Perry will headline the inaugural Zora Neale Hurston Summit, set for January 31–February 1 at Barnard College in New York City, sponsored by the Zora Neale Hurston Trust. HarperCollins Publishers and Amistad will cosponsor.
The summit will feature talks, workshops, and dramatizations of Hurston's literary works on a dedicated children's stage.
Confirmed speakers include Kendi, Perry, and authors and scholars Monica Miller (whose book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity is the inspiration for the theme of this year's Met Gala) and Deborah G. Plant (who shepherded the publication of Hurston's upcoming posthumous novel The Life of Herod the Great).
Proceeds raised from the summit will be donated to the Zora Neale Hurston Educational Foundation to support the restoration of Hurston's final home in Fort Pierce, Florida.
The Zora Neale Hurston Trust engages community member year-round with initiatives such as a monthly virtual book club, author talks, and the All About Zora YouTube series featuring discussions with scholars and artists.
