Clearing the shelves of August galleys, I got one last, lingering look at new titles. These two refused to go to galley heaven without at least a mention:
The Challenge of the Soul: Finding Strength in Trying Times—A Guide for the Spiritual Warrior by Miles Goldstein (Shambhala/Trumpeter, Aug.) comes from an author who is a black belt martial artist, rabbi and law enforcement chaplain. A guy who can discuss Jewish mysticism, boxing and the Central Asian nations he has visited can make some distinctive and unique connections others wouldn’t see.
nuChristian: Finding Faith in a New Generation by Russell E.D. Rathbun (Judson, Aug.) speaks in plain English about the postmodern generation—that demographic that advertisers and clergy covet—and what young adults would like to see religion do apart from fuel war and/or hypocrisy. Rathbun avoids the religion-speak that sometimes mars writing on the subject. —Marcia Z. Nelson
The following should have appeared with PW’s fall religion announcements (July 27):
PAULIST PRESS
Spiritual Masters for All Seasons (Nov., $18 paper) by Michael Ford showcases and assesses the contributions of Thomas Merton, Henri Nouwen, Anthony de Mello and John O’Donahue to spirituality.
Meeting Saint Paul with the Pope: Wednesday Audiences During the Pauline Jubilee Year (Nov., $10.95 paper) by Pope Benedict XVI includes 21 reflections by the pontiff on the seminal Christian writer.
