Bob Carlton has stepped down as v-p and publisher of Kirkus Reviews. A spokesperson for the magazine said there are no plans at present to replace Carlton and that his duties will be assumed by others at the company, including president Marc Winkelman.

Kirkus was acquired in February 2010 by shopping mall magnate Herb Simon after former parent company Nielsen Corp. threatened to close the book review publication. Winkelman, CEO of Calendar Holdings, and co-owner with Simon of the independent bookstore Tecolote Books, was named to head the venture overseeing Kirkus Reviews, Kirkus Media.

Carlton joined Kirkus after more than 20 years in the book business although with no experience in magazine publishing. He was part of the launch team for CourseSmart, and also senior v-p for business development at Thomson Learning (now Cengage).
