Deborah E. Wiley will retire from her role as senior v-p, corporate communications of John Wiley & Sons at the end of December. She will continue to serve as chairman of the Wiley Foundation. Susan Spilka will succeed her as v-p, corporate communications, effective January 1, 2011. Wiley was the first member of the Wiley family's sixth generation to join the business when she started at Wiley in 1968. Under her direction, the Wiley Foundation was established to award an annual Wiley Prize in Biomedical Sciences. She has also led Wiley’s corporate giving programs for more than 25 years and has been involved in Wiley’s tutoring and mentoring program in the Hoboken public schools. Spilka will report to Steve Smith, who will become Wiley’s next president and CEO on May 1, 2011. In addition to her existing responsibilities, she will direct Wiley’s corporate giving, gift matching and citizenship programs.
