OxfordUniversity Press has created a new operating structure and named Tim Barton tohead it. The new alignment puts OUP USAtogether with the press's UKacademic and journals divisions. Barton, currently president of OUP Inc., willassume his new assignment in July following the retirement of Martin Richardson, current managing director of the UK academic andjournals divisions.
With Barton's rise, OUP is looking to hire someone to manage the day-to-day operations of the American unit. Commentingon the new structure and Barton's expanded role, Nigel Portwood, chiefexecutive of OUP said: "The unprecedented changes in our industry - theemergence of electronic products and new business models, changes in libraryusage patterns, and the creation of global supply networks - are presentingtremendous challenges and opportunities to publishers. My appointment of Tim tolead the work of our three academic publishing businesses is an important steptowards positioning us for future success."
