Marshall Smith passed away on November 10 in Franklin, Ind., while returning from last weekend’s CIROBE (Chicago International Remainder and Overstock Exposition) to his bookstore, Key West Island Books. He had stopped for the night in a hotel and died suddenly of undetermined causes. Smith’s long and colorful career included many years as a travelling remainder salesperson covering the southeast and midwest territories for Outlet Book Co., Texas Bookman, Assorted Book Company, Marboro, and other remainder firms. In 1991 he and Bradley Jonas launched CIROBE, which became known as the country’s premier remainder book show. As owner of the Key West store, Smith delighted in sharing his love of Hemingway and pirate books. He is survived by three siblings and their families, by many friends both in and out of the book business, and by his beloved Ohio State Buckeyes.
