Media Source Inc., parent company of School Library Journal, Library Journal, and the Horn Book, announced July 24 a “strategic repositioning across the company and its media group.” As part of the process, MSI laid off Rebecca T. Miller, group publisher of the three journals, as well as SLJ editor in chief Kathy Ishizuka on July 23.

“As is the case for many organizations in the field, MSI is navigating a rapidly evolving landscape," LJ's Gary Price posted in his Info Docket column. “The change is part of MSI’s broader commitment to supporting librarians in their essential work—through trusted journalism, expertly curated books, and professional development that empowers them to lead, adapt, and advocate.”

MSI provided no rationale for the layoffs of Ishizuka and Miller. A spokesperson provided a link to Price's column, which noted only that “they will both be departing the organization following long tenures of distinguished service.”

Miller came to LJ in 1998 and has served as editor in chief of both LJ and SLJ. She has been EVP of publishing content for Media Source since February 2024.

Ishizuka became SLJ’s editor in chief in January 2020, when Miller was promoted to group publisher. Ishizuka joined SLJ in 2004 as technology editor and rose to the position of executive editor before taking the EIC helm from Miller. Ishizuka also served as partnerships director for SLJ and LJ.

Hallie Rich, former editor in chief of Library Journal, has been named editorial director of LJ and SLJ. Rich came to LJ in August 2023, after two decades on the executive team at Cuyahoga County (Ohio) Public Library.

Rich’s promotion and Ishizuka’s layoff leave both editor in chief positions, at LJ and SLJ, vacant. Elissa Gershowitz, editor in chief of the Horn Book, will now report directly to MSI president and CEO Robert Gogel.

In the announcement shared by LJ, Gogel said that “we’re committed to investing in the platforms, content, and leadership that help librarians anticipate change, advocate for their communities, and inspire lifelong readers.” LJ will mark its 150th year in 2026, alongside the American Library Association.
