'Observer' List Sparks International Cookbook Deal

Back in August, the British newspaper The Observer published a list of the 50 best cookbooks of all time. At the top of the list was Richard Olney's The French Menu Cookbook, which Scribner released in paperback in the U.S. in 1981, and Ten Speed published in hardcover in 2002. PW learned recently that as a result of that article, Ten Speed Press sold U.K. rights to the book to HarperCollinsUK in a whirlwind auction; that hardcover edition went on sale October 29. Ten Speed’s long-planned paperback edition will be coming out here in March 2011.

NYC Chef Writing Graphic Novel Cookbook

Amanda Cohen, chef of the New York restaurant Dirt Candy (which serves vegetarian cuisine) has signed with Clarkson Potter to write a graphic novel cookbook. Cohen wrote on her blog, “My problem has always been that I couldn’t think of a reason to add yet another cookbook to the already crowded shelves, but that all changed about a year ago when I had an idea for the kind of cookbook that would work for Dirt Candy: a graphic novel cookbook.” Cohen is working with Ryan Dunlavey, the award-winning artist behind the Action Philosophers series, on the cookbook.

Stewart, Tabori & Chang Launches Food Blog
Stewart, Tabori & Chang has launched a cookbooks blog called STC Cooks. Bloggers include , Abrams's senior manager for digital assets and web development, Chris Blank; STC senior editor Natalie Kaire; and marketing manager Kerry Liebling. The entries plug STC cookbooks, of course, but also offer cooking tips, recaps of food-related reality TV shows, and more.

The Piglet Returns
The good people over at Food52 are once again sponsoring a "cookbook tournament" a la the NCAA's basketball March Madness. Books in the running this year include Plenty by Yotam Ottolenghi and JonathanLovekin, Harvest to Heat by Darryl Estrine and Kelly Kochendorfer (Taunton), and Thai Street Food by David Thompson. The tourney begins tomorrow and the winner will be announced at a party on November 30.
