Pearson Takes Stake in Nook Media; B&N Holiday Sales Miss Targets
Barnes & Noble released some mixed news Friday morning, announcing an $89.5 million investment in its Nook Media subsidiary, while also reporting that it expects holiday sales to fall below expectations and that results in its Nook business will not meet forecasts for fiscal 2013.

Book Sales Had Strong Christmas Week; 'Third Wheel' Tops
Book sales had a strong showing in the week leading up to Christmas with sales rising 24% over the prior week at outlets that report to Nielsen BookScan. The 27.3 million print units sold during the week ended December 23, moreover, was a 5% increase over the last week before Christmas in 2011 when 26.1 million units were sold. Jeff Kinney’s The Third Wheel was the top selling title in Christmas week.

Bargain Prices and Amazon Promo Equal Big Sales
Between December 3 and December 14, Amazon ran its “12 Days, 12 Books” promotion, which saw limited supplies of 12 books reduced to bargain prices over 12 days.

Penguin Expands Dedicated Displays at Barnes & Noble
Penguin has expanded the number of Barnes & Noble outlets in which it operates the Best of Penguin displays. Measuring about 200 sq. ft. and featuring 150 titles, the first BOP sections were opened in 10 B&N’s last September and this fall Penguin added another 25 stores.

October Bookstore Sales Rose 4.5%
After falling 8% in September, bookstore sales bounced back in October with sales inching up 4.5% to $914 million, according to preliminary estimates released this morning by the U.S. Census Bureau.

ABA Gets Moving
The American Booksellers Association is moving from Tarrytown to White Plains, N.Y., starting this week. The ABA’s Web sites and IndieCommerce sites will not be affected by the move and will be fully operational.
