Books-A-Million Posts a 2012 Profit
Books-A-Million reported net income of $2.5 million for the year ended February 2, 2013 compared to a loss of $2.8 million in the prior year. Sales rose 7.5%, to $503.8 million, despite a 3.6% decline in comparable store sales.

Inkwood Books Sold
Inkwood Books has been sold to a new owner after a successful 21 year run. The new owner, long-time customer Stefani Beddingfield, will keep on former co-owner Leslie Reiner as consultant.

Obituary: Frank Moster
Long-time commission rep, Frank Moster of Melman-Moster Associates Inc., died on Sunday from a rare and fast-moving cancer. He was 69. He began his career in the book business at Macmillan in 1965. He also held positions at Holt, Rinehart & Winston; Hawthorne Books; Little, Brown; and Watson-Guptill before becoming a commission rep in 1983. The funeral liturgy will be held on Wednesday March 27 at Church of the Immaculate Conception in Mahwah, N.J.

With Friday’s Senate vote of 75 to 24 in favor of the Marketplace Fairness Act amendment to the FY 2014 budget resolution, bricks-and-mortar retailers were heartened that e-fairness could become a reality this year.
