Big Deals, ‘Seismic’ Change at LBF 2012
It wasn’t ash from an Icelandic volcano this time, but a cloud hung over the 2012 London Book Fair, fallout from the U.S. Department of Justice’s price-fixing suit against publishers, filed just days before the fair began. Unlike the eruption that stranded fairgoers two years ago, a busy show floor in the main hall as well as a noticeably large contingent from this year’s guest of honor, China, suggests the 2012 London Book Fair attendance may well exceed the 24,802 of last year, though final numbers won’t be released for weeks. And this year’s fair generated some buzz, with new books announced from big-name authors, a surprise seven-figure deal for a first-timer, and a few noteworthy trends emerging on the show floor and in the professional program.

Harlequin Lands Book By Creators of YouTube Phenom
As Harlequin expands more heavily into nonfiction, the publisher has announced a deal with the creators of the popular YouTube series, Sh*t Girls Say, Kyle Humphrey and Graydon Sheppard.

London Book Fair 2012: Crown Nabs Book by OkCupid Co-founder in Rumored 7 Fig Deal
In what looks to be one of the biggest dollar figure deals coming out of the London Book Fair so far, Amanda Cook at Crown took North American rights, for a rumored seven figures, to a nonfiction title called Dataclysm by Christian Rudder, one of the founders of the dating Web site OkCupid.com.

London Book Fair 2012: Foundry Splits One Story into Two Books, Two Deals
In a bit of creative deal-making, agents Peter McGuigan and Stephen Barbara, at Foundry Literary + Media, closed two deals—for an adult novel and a YA novel—for a debut thriller that was initially submitted as a standalone novel.
