Bookshop.org has launched an e-book platform today that will allow U.K. independent bookshops to sell digital books. Stores will keep 100% of profits from each sale.
The new platform, timed to coincide with Bookshop.org's fifth anniversary, offers readers an alternative to Amazon's Kindle for purchasing e-books at identical prices while directing revenue to local bookshops.
"When we launched Bookshop.org, the vision was to support local bookstores in their battle against Amazon and other online retailers," said Andy Hunter, CEO and founder of Bookshop.org. "Our e-book launch furthers our commitment to help bookstores flourish in the digital age."
The platform launches with over one million titles from major publishers, accessible through web browsers and Bookshop.org's Apple and Android apps. Readers can direct purchases to specific bookstores through dedicated links, ensuring 100% of profits go to their chosen store. Orders without a designated shop go to a shared profit pool distributed among all participating shops.
"As a reader who travels a lot, being able to access e-books from more platforms than just my local library is brilliant, and even more exciting that it's from the ethical platform that is Bookshop.org," said CP Hunter from The Folkestone Bookshop in Folkestone. "As a bookseller, making books even more accessible while still supporting independent shops is nothing but great news."
The platform replicates Bookshop.org's U.S e-book launch in January, which Hunter said has exceeded expectations. "We are already a year ahead of our original plan, and e-books make up 5% of our overall sales in the U.S.," Hunter said. "We are looking forward to e-books expanding to the U.K., empowering stores across the pond to be even more competitive."
In addition to indie bookstores, authors also welcomed the development. "One of the best things about the e-book revolution has been the ability to reach readers who can't access traditional books," said Erin Kelly, author of He Said/She Said and The Poison Tree. "I'm thrilled that the ultimate inclusive format is now available on Bookshop.org, and can contribute to the U.K.'s precious independent bookseller network."
Bookshop.org plans to add digital audiobook sales to the platform in 2026, though the company has not released further details.
