Recently a beloved character appeared at a sporting event, middle grade authors held a conversation, an author-illustrator made his debut, and a graphic novelist enjoyed a launch party.

Take Me Out to the Ball Game

On July 13, the New York Yankees and Hidden Pigeon Company collaborated for “The Pigeon Day at Yankee Stadium.” The first 10,000 guests ages 14 and under received a free Pigeon plush keychain, and young recipients made an appearance with their gift on the Jumbotron screen at the stadium. The Pigeon also held a meet and greet ahead of the game.

Finding That ‘Spark’

Chris Baron (front r.) stopped by Warwick's in La Jolla, Calif., on July 17 to present his new middle grade novel Spark (Feiwel and Friends). The book follows best friends Finn and Rabbit whose neighborhood has hit by wildfires, and the boys work together to save their community. Baron held a conversation with fellow children’s author Megan E. Freeman (front l.), and closed the event with a book signing.

Cartoons and Conversation

Lofty Pigeon Books in Brooklyn welcomed Akeem S. Roberts (r.) for his launch event on July 15, celebrating his author-illustrator debut Class Pet Ghost Detective #1: What Happened to the Naked Mole Rat? (Kokila). The series starter follows third grader Carter, who hopes to clear his name when everyone accuses him of killing their classroom pet, Mr. Pebbles. Roberts was in conversation with New Yorker cartoonist Ellis Rosen (l.).

Having a ‘Jazzy’ Time

On July 19, Jessixa Bagley celebrated the release of her new middle grade graphic novel Jazzy the Witch in Broom Doom (S&S) with a launch party at Pure Art Co. in Seattle. Books were provided by local bookstore Queen Anne Book Company. The graphic novel centers around young witch Jazzy, who finds unique modes of transportation when she struggles to learn to ride her broomstick. Here, Bagley dons a witchy costume in honor of the book’s protagonist.
