‘Crowned’ the Winner
Her Royal Highness Victoria, the Crown Princess of Sweden presented Laurie Halse Anderson (l.) with the 2023 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award diploma at a ceremony in Stockholm on May 2. The Lindgren Award is the world’s largest children’s book prize, with the laureate receiving five million Swedish krona; the winner was announced on March 7.
L.A. IS the Place to Be!
On April 20, authors Karina Evans (l.) and Aisling Fowler joined forces for an event highlighting Los Angeles authors at Village Well Books and Coffee in Culver City, Calif. The pair discussed their middle grade books Audrey Covington Breaks the Rules (Little, Brown) and Fireborn: Phoenix and the Frost Palace (HarperCollins).
A ‘Welcome’ Reading
Olga Herrera attended a launch event for her picture book The Unwelcome Surprise (Feiwel and Friends) on April 22 at Dancing Bear Toys and Games in Frederick, Md. Herrera held a storytime and live drawing demonstration, and Bongo the dog made a special guest appearance.
A Pretty ‘Fly’ Debut
Ruchira Gupta (l.) celebrated the release of her YA debut I Kick and I Fly (Scholastic Press) with an event at the Flatbush location of Greenlight Bookstore in New York City on April 20. Gupta held conversation with Gayle Forman (r.) and gave a reading.

Independent Bookstore Welcomes a ‘Queen’
In honor of Independent Bookstore Day, Caldecott Honor illustrator Cozbi Cabrera made a visit to Booked in Evanston, Ill., to speak with young readers about her picture book, Chef Edna: Queen of Southern Cooking (Cameron Kids), written by Melvina Noel.
