This month authors celebrate the launch of their books set on both land and sea; golden retrievers take over a bookshop to meet a golden guest; and an author tour leads an escape from a far-off land.
Pirate Queens
To celebrate the recent release of Pirate Queens: Dauntless Women Who Dared to Rule the High Seas (National Geographic), illustrator Sara Gomez Woolley (l.) and author Leigh Lewis (r.) took the stage at the Society of Illustrators in New York City on March 16, during Women’s History Month, to discuss the research behind creating the title and the illustrations throughout.
A Round of A-Paws
On March 12, to celebrate Daniel, the Golden Retriever by Tammy Tomlinson, illustrated by Kiersten Eagan (Feiwel and Friends), approximately 20 golden retrievers entered a mini dog show hosted by Riverstone Books in Pittsburgh. Many entrants were Daniel’s own offspring, making it a giant family reunion. PetPeople provided two grand prizes, gift baskets of dog supplies, that went to the oldest canine present, Claire, and the one who had traveled the farthest, Blu. Each contestant also received a doggy goody bag to take home.
Escape from Zafa
From February 27 to March 5, Julian Randall (l.) celebrated the launch of Pilar Ramirez and the Escape from Zafa (Holt) with a tour that included conversations with various authors including Jason Reynolds (r.), Kwame Mbalia, Carlos Hernandez, and Rena Barron; a school visit; and book signings at various bookstores.
