E-books continue to be headline news, and the children’s category is no exception: among the 20 houses reporting to the Association of American Publishers, e-book sales grew by nearly 300% in May 2012, compared with May 2011 figures. Of course, last year’s numbers were small – just $7 million in sales in May, representing just 5% of all children’s and young adult sales. By May 2012, e-books represented 20% of the market. With board book and paperback sales losing ground, and hardcovers remaining fairly flat, the smart money may be on smart devices.
