Night Owl and Early Bird
Lauren Fornoles, illus. by Xiao. Little Leaflet, $17.99 (58p) ISBN 979-8-9912897-0-2
It’s tough when friends are on different schedules, but tree-house roomies Night Owl, who’s fluffy and brown, and bluebird-like Early Bird have found their groove: this five-section chapter book opens with the two cheerily making “tea for Early Bird’s bedtime snack and toast for Night Owl’s breakfast.” Across the brief vignettes, time spent together also means respecting each other’s concerns. When Night Owl isn’t a fan of scary movies, Early Bird makes popcorn and constructs an epic pillow fort. And after Early Bird finds the bats on their night hike frightening, Night Owl offers reassurance and introduces Early Bird to s’mores. Crisp ink- and wash-style illustrations by Xiao have a comforting feel, a lovely sense of setting, and glints of gentle humor: when Early Bird convinces Night Owl to go to the beach, they loll together under a big umbrella like seasoned shore-goers. Framing the message that “two friends do not have to be the same to love each other,” Fornoles demonstrates with a light, sure touch that treasured friendships—built on listening, trust, and care—are worth some extra effort. Ages 4–7. (Self-published)
