The Muppets Official Crochet Amigurumi: 16 Projects to Create Your Favorite Muppets

Drew Hill. Weldon Owen, $29.99 (176p) ISBN 979-8-88674-177-3

Hill (Crochet Magical Creatures) shows how to crochet some of Jim Henson’s most beloved creations in this spirited guide. Hill’s bare bones approach includes little besides written instructions on crafting each Muppet, though he provides QR codes that link to supplementary step-by-step photo instructions for every pattern. Each project follows roughly the same construction process—crochet the limbs, body, head, and accessories separately; sew them together; and then attach additional materials to flesh out the Muppet’s distinguishing features. For instance, the Swedish chef is made by using single crochet stitches to create his body, chef’s hat, and apron; sewing the pieces together; and then attaching unruly tufts of yarn with lark’s head knots for his bushy eyebrows and mustache. Other details are achieved through felt, such as Kermit’s tongue and Miss Piggy’s eyes. The reliance on single and half-double crochet stitches makes this easy even for beginners, and most of the Muppets translate well to the amigurumi form. Beaker appears appropriately frazzled, and Animal’s disheveled locks are effectively recreated with frayed yarn. Unfortunately, a couple of the projects are less successful. Scooter’s jolly visage looks aghast when recast in yarn, and Sam the Eagle’s legs are awkwardly small. Still, Muppet enthusiasts will take to this. (Oct.)
