I’ll Follow You
Charlene Wang. Mindy’s Book Studio, $28.99 (330p) ISBN 978-1-6625-3146-0
Wang’s humdrum debut breaks little new ground in its exploration of toxic female friendships. Teen best friends Faith Thibodeaux and Kayla Lightfoot live in a rundown Mississippi trailer park and dream of leaving their lives behind. When they create a joint social media persona named Hannah Primrose, with Faith serving as shrewd caption writer and Kayla appearing as the account’s gorgeous face, their combined appeal makes them go unexpectedly viral. But Faith has a secret: she’s been accepted to a prestigious college, and when she tells Kayla she plans to enroll, Kayla cuts contact and deletes all of Hannah’s posts. At school, Faith has trouble making friends with her wealthy classmates until she joins a sorority and develops a rapport with an art history professor. Then Kayla shows up at Faith’s dorm, their friendship rekindles, and Kayla convinces Faith to revitalize the Hannah Primrose account. Kayla starts posing as a college student and pushing Hannah’s content into increasingly personal and risqué directions, kicking off a series of dangerous psychological games between the pair that ends in tragedy. Shallow characters, diffuse plotting, and well-worn themes of the dark side of social media make it difficult to stay invested. This is a letdown. Agent: Andre Blatt, WME. (Oct.)
