Someone Is After Lulu Dupree

Josi S. Kilpack. Shadow Mountain, $18.99 trade paper (320p) ISBN 978-1-63993-431-7

Kilpack (the Sadie Hoffmiller Culinary mysteries) launches a promising new cozy series focused on LuLu Dupree, who’s five years into a new life in Sedona, Ariz., after suffering a traumatic brain injury in a car accident. Unable to return to her job as a Seattle accountant, LuLu changed her name and fled to the desert, ditching her former career for a quiet life running a small cleaning company. It’s been mostly smooth sailing ever since, until someone tries to poison LuLu’s Snapple with herbicide, and then she’s nearly gunned down on the street. The police don’t believe someone is targeting LuLu, so she seeks the help of PI Jaime Hernandez, a semidisgraced former prosecutor recommended to her by one of her clients. Together, LuLu and Jaime comb through her past for clues about who might want her dead. Meanwhile, LuLu manages the lingering effects of her accident, including light sensitivities and an aversion to conflict. The “brain hacks” LuLu employs to get through the day offer a unique spin on the neurodivergent detective trope, and Kilpack is a pro when it comes to breezy but suspenseful action. This goes down easy. Agent: Lane Heymont, Tobias Literary. (Sept.)
