The Month of Ramadan

This informative introduction to the rituals of Ramadan follows young narrator Deenie’s observing the month of fasting and mindfulness for the first time. Initially, taking part feels lonely, until beginning to fast leads to experiences that might have otherwise been missed—the joy of cheering the soccer team from the sidelines and the tranquility of being in community with others. Over the course of the month, Deenie begins to see “kindness everywhere,” in words and gestures, and concludes that “a month like this can make my whole year.” Alongside soft art with pastel backgrounds, Zahri’s contemplative text muses on the practice of learning “to do big things by changing one little thing at a time.” Characters are portrayed with various skin tones.
