The Last Guy You Kiss

Carla De Guzman. Afterglow, $12.99 trade paper (288p) ISBN 978-1-335-57495-4

De Guzman (Manila Takes Manhattan) riffs on the Filipino rom-com Got 2 Believe in this cute rom-com. “Single since birth” floral designer Mara Jane Barretto is the owner a flower shop in Quezon City—and also the face of an internet meme thanks to a viral photo of her scowling which was taken by her distractingly cute acquaintance Jay Montinola. Mara and Jay are thrown back together at the wedding of Mara’s sister (Jay’s ex) to Jay’s good friend (and Mara’s unrequited crush). After Jay apologizes for accidentally starting the meme, Mara asks him to teach her about love, sex, and relationships. Meanwhile, Jay and his friends think he is cursed: every woman he kisses finds their true love immediately afterward. It’s happened so often Jay believes he isn’t cut out for a relationship of his own. He’s willing to use the curse to help Mara meet her match—but one kiss between them unexpectedly leads to more. De Guzman writes about the Philippines as vividly as ever, including some mouthwatering descriptions of local foods. Jay makes a somewhat bland hero, but there are still plenty of endearing moments between him and Maya. De Guzman’s fans will not be disappointed. (Apr.)
