All the Stars Align

Gretchen Schreiber. Wednesday, $21 (352p) ISBN 978-1-250-89218-8

High school senior Piper Hadley grew up knowing that all the women in her family have been blessed by Fate with the ability to identify their true love at first sight. But because of her “whole disabled thing”—she has nine fingers, one kidney, and scoliosis—Hadley thinks Fate never visited her. Family drama surrounding her parents’ recent divorce (of which the Hadley women disapprove) and her aunts’ insistence that Piper take over running the family jewelry store, Hadley’s Treasures, in her mother’s stead add further layers of tumult to Piper’s home life. Though she longs to forge her own path, she also struggles with guilt, believing she’s at fault for her parents’ split and her relatives’ discontent. Then Piper meets “the one.” A newbie at romance, she asks estranged BFF Leo—whom she hasn’t spoken to in months—for help, a decision that turns out to be more complicated than she expected. While Piper’s single-minded determination to find her true love can feel somewhat repetitive, Schreiber (Ellie Haycock Is Totally Normal) empathetically relays the protagonist’s vulnerability and innocent approach to romance. It’s a meandering, delicate family drama about embracing the chaos of love and life. Main characters read as white. Ages 13–up. Agent: Hillary Jacobson, CAA. (Apr.)
