A Curious Kind of Magic

Mara Rutherford. Wednesday, $20 (368p) ISBN 978-1-250-35988-9

Two teens’ unlikely partnership impels them on a quest to break a curse in a Scottish folklore–inspired adventure from Rutherford (A Multitude of Dreams). All Willow Stokes needs in life is her comfortable cottage, her loyal kitten Argyle, her best friend (and secret crush) Finlay, and, following her father’s death, enough money to pay the rent on his failing curiosity shop. Business would boom if the establishment’s “magical” wares contained any magic. Upon meeting traveler Brianna Hargrave, who’s capable of enchanting ordinary objects, Willow sees a way to save her father’s shop. Bri doesn’t view her ability as a gift, though; to her, it’s a curse that she’s determined to break. But since Willow needs magic, and Bri needs Willow’s help to find the only grimoire that can accomplish Bri’s goal, they begrudgingly team up. Accompanied by Finlay, the pair set out on a perilous mission, along the way risking everything they love and uncovering dark secrets. Despite a somewhat plodding pace, the novel features lovably rendered characters, sharp wit, and a slow-burning friends-to-lovers romance, making for a delightfully cozy tale. Willow and Finlay cue as white; Bri has brown skin. Ages 13–up. Agent: Uwe Stender, Triada US. (Oct.)
